We will desperately miss--because we desperately need, now more than ever--his hard-won but lightly worn knowledge, his insight, his optimism, his humour, his integrity. No one has understood the Caribbean better, and few have lived so selflessly.
From Nikipedia’s brief but extremely moving tribute to Lloyd Best, “one of the truly great men of the Caribbean,” who passed away yesterday afternoon.
And will somebody please start working on Lloyd Best’s Wikipedia entry.
UPDATE (March 25, 2007): There’s now a Wikipedia entry.
should I blame the local national media or be glad that I had to find out about this here first?
I am saddened. Best REALLY mattered to the development of refreshingly original Caribbean intellectualism.
*sigh*
A jus suh di ting set up still
Lloyd Best may no longer be alive in the biological sense, but for those of us who try to make sense of “Our Space” he will always be alive in the tremendous work he left behind. The intellectual output of this Caribbean Man is too important to us – the challenge is to get a “critical mass” to understand the potential value of his work. Only then we as a Caribbean People will “take up our bed and walk”. As Lloyd Best may have said – ” How do we take the work further”
