Issues cannot hear. Why then do some people (e.g. academics, politicians, corporate operatives) talking about “speaking to issues”? How about speaking about issues, to people. If you keep on talking like this, we’re going to start believing you don’t really want us to understand.

Funnily enough, Alice, this wasn’t prompted by CSA (and no, I haven’t attended any of the events as yet) but by a statement from Bermuda’s opposition party which included the expression “speak to [something inanimate or abstract]“. Unclear language, especially when used to obscure communication, is one of my general pet peeves. And I should have included lawyers on that list as well!

And what about “interrogating”? Couldn’t that be left to the noble folks at Abu Ghraib?
