An e-mail just landed in my inbox inviting me to a “Football Fever” all-inclusive lime on Wednesday 10 May, which all Soca Warriors fans know is the day of the Trinidad & Tobago v. Peru match at the National Stadium. (FYI, the T&T v. Peru match also happens to be the only international football match being played anywhere in the world on May 10.)

Since I don’t plan on making an appearance at the National Stadium (as least as of now), I was thinking this might be the perfect occasion to test Skype’s new Skypecasting feature. Readers of this blog may remember that I relayed the local radio broadcast via Skype to four select individuals (the maximum allowed in a Skype phone conference) on November 16. Skypecasts, on the other hand, can accomodate up to 100 people.

I can’t promise jumbo screens, free doubles and corn soup, a rhythm section, goodie bags or secure parking (which in any case you won’t need, unless you happen to be connecting from your car). Nor can I guarantee that TSTT’s 256k-masquerading-as-ADSL connection isn’t going to decide to crap out on me. But if more than, say, five people are interested in being part of this, I’m willing to give it a shot. I should also say that Skypecasts are advertised publicly, so it will be first come first served. Please note in addition that there is a slight chance I may be out of the country on May 10, and if somebody happens to drop a ticket on me between now and then, well. . . . I’m sure that in my position you’d do the same.

If you’re interested in participating in the Skypecast, please drop me a line at caribbeanfreeradio[at]gmail[dot]com with “I Love the Soca Warriors” in the subject line and letting me know what country you’ll be connecting from.

The match starts at 6:30pm Trinidad & Tobago time (10:30pm GMT), and will be preceded by “a pulsating pre-game cultural show” (Shaun Fuentes’ words, not mine) featuring the likes of Destra, Shurwayne Winchester, 3canal and Maximus Dan, which may or may not be broadcast.

To tune in you’ll need a broadband internet connection, the latest version of Skype, and it would be helpful if you took a look at Skype’s “Getting Started with Skypecasts” page. I’ll post further details here closer to the date.

[...] Tonight, T&T will face Peru in an important friendly. Tonight, the legendary Little Magician will play his last game on home soil. Tonight, for the first time in history, the Anthem of the West Indies will be sung. Tonight, I will be tuning in to a live skypecast of the game, wishing, wishing that I could be there. [...]
