The December 1 earthquake was only 4.1, and we've had much stronger ones in the past year. There was a 6.1 near the SE coast in December 2004, and a 4.9 and a 5.1 near the Venezuelan coast in October, both about 70 miles from Port of Spain. The reason why this most recent quake felt so strong is that was not out at sea but on land, only 3 miles south of San Juan and just outside Port of Spain; but also because it was so shallow, i.e. near the surface. The two October quakes, for instance, were about 90 and 40 miles down. But the December 1 quake was only 10 miles down. Being closer and shallower it was felt much more sharply than its magnitude suggests. Hope it's not starting up activity on a new fault next to the city ...

Had just got home from the Dionne Warwick show when it happened, sending me scampering outside. This is the what, third really sharp quake we've had in the past few months? Is the Big One coming soon?
