So we’ve now had four bombings in POS – July 11 on Frederick Street, August 10 on George Street, September 10 at KFC Independence Square and now tonight in St. James. And yet, the Prime Minister has gone on record with TV6 News stating that the crime wave we are facing is a global one. First of all, that’s an innacurate statement. Today’s Newsday reported that T&T’s murder rate is now 30 in 100,000. Barbados is at 9; Jamaica, with the 3rd highest rate in the world, is at 45. We are even ahead of developed nations like the US (16), Norway (2.2), Sweden (1.7), Japan (0.7) and the UK (0.6). These figures certainly suggest that the problem is ours and not the world’s. We need to demand more of ourselves and our leaders. Last time I checked, PM Manning was not elected to govern or protect the safety of the globe. He has one little corner of it to handle and is doing a piss-poor job, adding insult to injury by spouting hollow rhetoric about “putting things in place”, “improving technology” etc. The time is NOW. Human life is sacred and it’s time we sent that message to those who think otherwise.
