Global Voices

This week my Global Voices post takes the form of a conversation between Nicholas Laughlin and myself about the state of the Caribbean blogosphere.

Port of Spain is the bomb

I was in an all-day session today so only now receiving it, but around 335pm today my good pal and trusty CFR correspondent Janine Mendes-Franco sent me this map (click to view a larger version at my Flickr page – apologies to the copyright holders, but is seems to be circulating freely via email) showing [...]

CFR tees in the land of La Trinity

Janine Mendes-Franco and C*POP take a time out from a video shoot in Trinidad on October 25, 2005. Janine wears a CFR Frog Jr. Spaghetti Tank, and C*POP sports an Organic Cotton Tee bearing his own C*POP Box Design.

CFR t-shirts in Alaska!

Always knew CFR had fans in far-flung places, but here are the t-shirts to prove it! Listener Wendy Warnick took this photo of Fairbanks, Alaska residents (L to R) Andy Reynolds, Cindy Wentworth and Mason Damrau sporting their Caribbean Free Radio apparel during a rehearsal of the University of Alaska Fairbanks’s UAF Steel Drum Band [...]

Alpha Boys’ School web site

The musical program of the School matured and gained a unique stature during the jazz-era of the 1940s and ’50s. This period saw the training of the majority of Jamaica’s top hornsmen, many of whom would go on to be instrumental in the development of the island’s first indigenous pop music: ska. Ska’s most famous [...]

More on the “Death March”

Following on the heels of his fine eyewitness account of the event, Nicholas Laughlin this afternoon posts his analysis of the local press response to the “Death March“, the anti-crime rally which took place in Port of Spain, Trinidad on Saturday 22 October. Both are wonderful examples of how a blog can enrich the conversation [...]

Flickr PRO account, anyone?

A rogue plugin caused me to upload a bunch of massive photos by mistake, eating up the 20MB quota on my Flickr account in one fell swoop and preventing me from uploading any more pics of yesterday’s “Death March“. So I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to a PRO account. PayPal, however, is [...]

Report on Trinidad’s “Death March”

“The Promenade was covered with people as far west as we could see, and the crowd looked like Trinidad.” Nicholas Laughlin, in a substantial and most heartfelt report on the “Death March” which took place in Port of Spain, Trinidad this morning. A must-read, and not only because I figure in it. Photo: Skye Hernandez [...]

This week in the Caribbean blogosphere

Here’s my Global Voices Caribbean blogosphere roundup for this week, which turned out to be quite an active one for bloggers.

CFR is now in the iTunes directory

Normally I’d have put an exclamation point at the end of the title to this post, but to be honest, it all feels quite anti-climactic. So we’re in the iTunes directory. I’d say “at last”, but to tell the truth, I’d sort of given up hope. Which people who know me will tell you is [...]

Freeness: a trope

Occasionally I discover a web link to CFR that has nothing to do with the content of the blog or podcast, but relates directly to the word “Free” in the title. Like this one, for instance, where CFR appears on a list along with “Gluten-free Girl”. . . .

CFR t-shirt in Sweden

CFR listener Andreas Ekberg, who divides his time between Sweden and New York, received his CFR t-shirt today in Stockholm. He also promises to send photos of his CFR mug when he receives it! While you’re at it, check out some of Andreas’s designs, which include cool fonts, e-cards and other artworks, wearable and otherwise. [...]

Free Culture: the podcast

If you’re an auditory learner (as I am, sometimes) and interested in issues of copyrights etc. then this one’s for you: the landmark book Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity, by Lawrence Lessig, is now available as a podcast. The print version is always [...]

Bomb blast – the day after

Had to leave home early this morning for an appointment out in rural Trinidad (a most welcome change of atmosphere) so only now getting back to the computer. Naturally, the three dailies, the Express, the Guardian (not a permalink) and Newsday have extensive coverage of yesterday’s events, but you’ll also want to read Taran Rampersad’s [...]

Global Voices

I’ve been invited by Global Voices Online to help track activity in the anglophone Caribbean blogosphere by posting weekly summaries to their own magnificent blog. Posted for the first time today — take a read. And read about the Global Voices project here.

More on the bomb blast #8

Naturally, the opposition seizes the opportunity to engage in some politicking. Newly elected Political Leader of the United National Congress, Winston Dookeran, just called into Gayelle to say he is “shocked and appalled” that this situation has been allowed to continue in the country and that the current government’s efforts to deal with have been [...]

A comment on the bomb blasts

Just in case you missed it, here’s a perceptive comment left on one of the earlier posts by “Spike”: So we’ve now had four bombings in POS – July 11 on Frederick Street, August 10 on George Street, September 10 at KFC Independence Square and now tonight in St. James. And yet, the Prime Minister [...]

More on the bomb blast #7

Gayelle reporting that Scotland Yard officers are on the scene of the bomb blast. Some concern expressed about rain messing things up on the crime scene. After this year’s first bomb blast back in July, the investigation was “compromised” by a security helicopter which landed in the area and sent the evidence flying. Technorati Tags: [...]

More on the bomb blast #6

I have too many things going on at the same time, but in the background I think I hear the Minister of National Security saying something lame on Gayelle, and my friend Janine Mendes-Franco tells me that Prime Minister Patrick Manning phoned in a report to CCN TV6 News saying something to the effect that [...]

More on the bomb blast from Gayelle TV #5

From Gayelle, official information from hospital: 10 people injured but only three warded. Gayelle now talking to Police Commissioner Trevor Paul. Five persons detained. Trevor Paul confirms that police have conducted raids but too soon to conclude anything. Technorati Tags: trinidad+tobago, bomb+blast, caribbean
