Stories to Go, a podcast I check in on from time to time, features readings of short stories by authors from around the world.

In recent times they’ve showcased works by two Caribbean authors, “In the Night” by Antiguan-born Jamaica Kincaid, and “Devil Beads” by Trinidadian Marina Ama Omowale Maxwell.

In which I get on Skype with my colleague and buddy Simon Lee, erstwhile Trinidad-based journalist now back in London, and shoot the breeze on topics ranging from this year’s Notting Hill Carnival to the recent production of Derek Walcott’s “Steel” in Trinidad and the demise of the bricks-and-mortar version of Rhyner’s Record Store; and of course, ol’ Sio’s favourite topic–la música!.

Simon’s music recommendations: In the Heart of the Moon by Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté, and anything from Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and conguero Miguel “Anga” Diaz.

He’s championed the show on the Evil Genius Chronicles, and now he’s wearing the shirt. Where would CFR be without Dave Slusher?

Have had several reports about download problems with the latest show and it does appear that Libsyn (the place I host my audio files) is having some difficulties.

For those of you who are desperate for your CFR fix, however, I’ve uploaded another copy of the show to another server, so feel free to take a toke from here instead. Please note that this is only temporary and that it will not affect the Online Player.

7:35pm UPDATE
: Libsyn seem to have sorted themselves out, so I’m removing the above mentioned link. Get your CFR fix from here instead.

CFR listener Russ Johnson ran a 10K in San Francisco last week, and guess what was part of his kit? Yup–a CFR t-shirt!

For copyright reasons I can’t post the photo here, but you can see the fleet-footed Russ flying the CFR colours by visiting this link.

“Macafouchette” is a French creole word meaning leftovers, and it’s also the title of this show in which I–after another longish absence–sneak a few hours out out of my ridiculous schedule, dip into the CFR storage bins and choose a couple of choice tidbits which I hope come together to make something resembling a show. In this one I demonstrate one of the possible reasons West Indies cricket is in the state it’s in, talk about some of the stupid and awful things happening these days in Trinidad and Tobago and take you back to St. Barts for a musical interlude.

New Orleans Mississppi Blues

On a recent episode of the ever-wonderful Open Source Radio devoted to the situation in New Orleans, Christopher Lydon described the city as “the most exotic, most Caribbean [emphasis added], most vitally decadent, most nearly universal city in the United States”.

Since one of the things New Orleans and the Caribbean share is an attitude towards music (that at the deepest level, it’s something more than entertainment), I’ve decided to devote some more space on this blog to spreading the word that Putumayo World Music has pledged to donate all proceeds from the sale of their albums New Orleans and Mississippi Blues to relief efforts in the Gulf Coast area through the end of the year.

You can also find a list of other organisations to donate to and through at the Network for Good.

hommage

A short one just to say I’m alive, well and swamped with work, and also to thank you all for supporting CFR with donations and t-shirt purchases, with special thanks to Dave Slusher for mentioning his CFR t-shirt purchase on the Evil Genius Chronicles. I also play a PSA with info about one of the ways you can support the victims of Hurricane Katrina, remember the Martiniquans who died in the plane crash in Venezuela on August 16, and say that I’ll probably be attending the Portable Media Expo in November.
